Acidosis in Cattle
Acidosis is known by several names; lactic acidosis, grain overload, rumenitis, founder and occurs when the acidity of the rumen falls below a pH of 5.5 from a normal of 5.8 to 6 in grain adapted cattle and 6.8 to 7 for cattle on forage. The severity of acidosis and the nature of the symptoms depends on the pH drop, loss of rumen function and degree of other metabolic functions.
Cause of Acidosis
Acidosis is caused by an overload of lactic acid in the rumen produced from the fermentation of excessive amounts of fermentable carbohydrates. The high lactic acid level drives the rumen pH down and significant changes in rumen microflora take place, rumen motility is reduced and the animal goes off feed with a variety of symptoms, including kicking at the belly due to ingestion, discomfort, drooling, panting, eating dirt, and diarrhea.
Prevention of acidosis requires keeping feed intake consistent and monitoring the daily intake of readily fermentable carbohydrate to maintain good rumen function. Diet formulation is also important with a good balance of fiber and non‐fiber carbohydrates.
